Here is a message for the third graders:
I made a big mistake on tonight’s math homework. I wanted the kids to work on the Daily Homework Practice 7~7 and not 7~11. Whoops! If you already did 8~1 thinking that was what I wanted… consider yourself ahead of the game. If you want to do the correct assignment (7~7) it is great practice for problem solving strategies. If you are utterly confused, just relax and skip the math homework altogether. Sorry everyone!

Time to Multiply

We’ve been working on our MULTIPLICATION skills here in grade 3 and we’re progressing nicely. I think that everyone could benefit from a little extra practice at home. If the grade 3 parents could help the students out by practicing with a set of flash cards (they’re easy to make at home) that go all the way through the 12 tables, that would help students be able to recall their math facts rapidly.

There are lots of sites online where you can practice your multiplication skills as well. I’ve provided links to a few below.

Celebrating 100 Days of 3rd Grade

100 year-old Third Graders.

The 3rd graders had a really fun day on Wednesday, the 100th day of the 2010-2011 school year. We focused on the number 100 all day long. Many of our grade 3 students showed up dressed as 100 year-old versions of themselves. Ms. Ramilo helped with powder to grey our hair and make-up to give wrinkles and facial hair. We came up with “100 Reasons Why School rocks” and 100 number sentences that lead to 100. We also had a 100 toothpick stacking contest, which was very difficult. At the end of the day, we ate a 100 cake together and did some creative writing. In our writing, we wished for 100 of SOMETHING. Everyone came up with different responses including; “I wish I had 100 puppies”, “I wish I had 100 languages”, “I wish I had 100 cousins”,”I wish I had 100 condors”, “I wish I had 100 brains”, and “I wish I had 100 clones of me.” The responses were very creative and very personal. I hope that it was a memorable day for everyone, I know it was for me.

I was proud of my creation... and the class liked it too!

The 100th Day of School Approaches!

On Wednesday, February 16th we will be celebrating the 100th day of the 2010-2011 school year. Students will participate in a number of fun and educational activities revolving around the number 100. The class decided that they would like to dress up as if they were 100 years old OR they may dress up in the clothing styles from 100 years ago. These costumes are completely optional. For those who do chose to dress as an elderly person, we will have some makeup and powder (for grey hair) at school to enhance your costumes.

In our new science unit, we are looking at simple machines. We’re using words like friction, force, work, effort, and efficiency. Ask your third grader to identify how simple machines (inclined planes, wheels and axles, levers, wedges, screws, and pulleys) are used around the house and around town.

Exciting News… from Portugal?

Hello again,

I’ve got fun news to share as I attempt to resurrect the Grade 3 blog. It has clearly been too long. Last week, we received a letter from Mr. Wallace’s third grade class from the Carlucci American International School of Lisbon. The grade 3 crew was super excited to get some foreign correspondence. Mr. Wallace’s bunch is much like our own, in that they are a truly international bunch with students from South Korea, the United States, Portugal, Brazil, Ireland, Spain, Italy, and Denmark. We’ve drafted a lengthy, detailed response and it should be in the post soon. We can’t wait to get another letter from Portugal and learn more about our new friends.
